François Hollande, during his first public campaign, quoted: "They failed because they didn't have a dream." He credited the quote to William Shakespeare, however, this was not of William's quote. Nicholas Shakespeare actually had this quote several hundred years later in his 1989 book The Vision of Elena Silves. Woops!

Julia and Julie

In the movie Julie and Julia, Julie attempts to cook all the recipes from Julia's cook book and blog about them. While Julie and Julia are two different people, they have many similarities and differences. An example of a similarity is that they both were writing about food. They also both were involved with a government job (Julia's husband being an ambassador, and Julie having an actual job for the government). But the two of them were very different in their behavior. When something didn't really work for Julia, she kept calm and happy and moved on. While Julie would cry and had breakdowns over little things. While Julie and Julia were different people they were also very similar.

1½ cups flour
2 tablespoons sugar
¼ teaspoon salt
6 tablespoons cold butter, cut into 1-inch pieces
3 tablespoons cold vegetable shortening
¼ cup (or a bit more) ice water
3 cups firm cooking apples, peeled, cored and sliced very thinly, about 1/8-inch
2/3 cup white sugar, divided
½ tablespoon cinnamon
1 egg
¼ cup sifted flour
½ cup heavy cream
3 tablespoons Calvados or brandy
Powdered sugar for garnish

Heat oven to 375 degrees.

Toss flour, sugar and salt together in a large bowl. Cut in butter and shortening until mixture resembles coarse meal, with various-size pieces of fat. Add the ¼ cup ice water, and mix with a fork until dough coheres into a ball, adding more water a tablespoon at a time if necessary. Wrap dough ball in plastic wrap, and refrigerate 30 minutes.

Roll out dough to fit the tart pan, turning the edges over into the pan to create a double-thick edge, pressed against the inner sides of the pan. Lay a sheet of aluminum foil over the dough, fitting it firmly against sides. Fill with pie weights or dried beans, and bake 10 minutes. Remove from oven, remove foil and weights, prick bottom of pastry and return to oven for 5 more minutes, until slightly browned.

Toss sliced apples in a bowl with 1/3 cup sugar and cinnamon, then arrange them artfully in the partially baked pastry shell in the pie pan. Bake in upper third of oven for 20 minutes. Remove from oven, and let cool while making the custard.

In a bowl, beat together the remaining sugar and egg until mixture is thick, pale yellow and falls back on itself in a slowly dissolving ribbon. Beat in the flour, then the cream and finally the brandy. Pour the custard over the apples, shaking the pan a bit so the custard will settle between the slices. The custard should come almost up to the top of the pastry shell.

Return to oven for 10 to 15 minutes, until custard puffs, sets and browns very slightly. Top with powdered sugar if desired, and serve warm.  Serves 8
